P&A Employee Survey Results

In the spring of 2007, the Council of Academic and Professional Administrators (CAPA) conducted a short survey of the 4600 P&A employees on all five of the University’s campuses to gather data on the important contributions made by P&A employees to the University of Minnesota.

Why a survey?

Part of CAPA’s governance role is to listen to P&As--their feedback, ideas, and concerns.

As part of the Transforming the U initiative and the University of Minnesota's goal to become one of the top three public research universities in the world, the Office of Metrics and Measurement is currently collecting data on both faculty and students to capture their contributions to and work at the University. CAPA’s survey captures some of the extensive contributions of P&A employees at the University.

The purpose of CAPA’s survey was three-fold:

  1. To capture the critical contributions being made by P&A employees to the University of Minnesota.
  2. To share survey findings with top University administrators and officials as well as the Office of Metrics and Measurement and to request that data be collected on P&A employees as part of the Transforming the U process.
  3. To take a leadership role on a national level regarding measuring the contributions of professional staff to leading research universities.

The Results

CAPA is presently drafting final report regarding the survey findings. Approximately 40% of P&A employees responded, which is a remarkable response rate. The information provided reflects the breadth and depth of work P&A employees are doing and is invaluable to capturing what P&A employees contribute to the University, as well as to Minnesota, the nation, and internationally, on a daily basis.

The final report will be completed by mid-November and will be posted on the CAPA Web site. An annotated copy of the survey results will also be posted that will include all open-ended responses from survey participants. The report and survey will be shared with the Administration, as well as the Office of Metrics and Measurement. Our hope is that critical data will begin to be collected on all P&A employees at the University as part of the Strategic Positioning process.

CAPA would like to take this opportunity to thank P&A employees for taking the time to complete this survey and by doing so, to help us to bring visibility and attention to the contributions of P&A employees at the University of Minnesota.
